The Strange Little Things Adults Pretend Are Completely Normal

August 20, 2026 · 6 min read · mehreen

Growing up is often described as a journey toward wisdom, responsibility, and independence.

Nobody really talks about the other part.

The part where you walk into a room and immediately forget why you are there.

The part where you open the refrigerator three times as if a completely new meal might magically appear.

The part where you spend ten minutes looking for your phone while holding it in your hand.

Being an adult comes with responsibilities, but it also comes with a collection of strange little habits that somehow become completely normal.

And the funniest part?

Almost everyone does them.

The Refrigerator Investigation

There is a special relationship between adults and refrigerators.

You open it.

You look inside.

You find nothing interesting.

You close it.

Five minutes later, you open it again.

Why?

Nobody knows.

Perhaps you are hoping the refrigerator has received new information.

Maybe you believe that if you stare at the shelves long enough, a delicious meal will reveal itself.

The refrigerator remains unimpressed.

Still, you return.

It becomes less about food and more about hope.

Talking to Yourself Is Apparently Part of Adulthood

Sometimes you need to have a serious conversation.

Unfortunately, nobody else is available.

So you talk to yourself.

You explain the situation.

You argue both sides.

You win the argument.

Then you realize you have been standing in the kitchen having a full meeting with yourself.

The strange thing is that talking to yourself often makes perfect sense—until someone walks in.

Suddenly, you become extremely quiet.

“No, I wasn’t talking to myself.”

Of course not.

You were simply conducting an important internal meeting.

The Mystery of the Missing Phone

Few things create panic faster than not knowing where your phone is.

You search the table.

You check the sofa.

You look under the pillow.

You accuse everyone around you of moving it.

Then you discover it.

In your hand.

For a brief moment, you experience every emotion at once.

Relief.

Embarrassment.

Confusion.

And then you continue using the phone as though nothing happened.

The human brain is impressive.

It can remember childhood events from fifteen years ago but occasionally cannot locate the object currently touching its fingers.

Saying “I’m Fine” When You Are Clearly Not Fine

Adults become surprisingly talented at saying two words:

“I’m fine.”

You can be exhausted.

Overwhelmed.

Annoyed.

Confused.

One minor inconvenience away from questioning every decision you have ever made.

Someone asks, “Are you okay?”

“I’m fine.”

A beautiful little sentence containing absolutely no useful information.

Sometimes “I’m fine” means fine.

Sometimes it means, “I don’t have the energy to explain this.”

And sometimes it means, “Please give me food and leave me alone for ten minutes.”

Making a To-Do List and Feeling Productive

Writing down your tasks feels strangely satisfying.

You write:

Then you look at the list.

You feel productive.

You have accomplished nothing.

But the list looks excellent.

Sometimes you even add something you already completed just so you can cross it off.

That little check mark provides an unreasonable amount of happiness.

One task completed.

Six remaining.

Confidence restored.

The “I Will Sleep Early Tonight” Lie

Every night begins with good intentions.

“Tonight I’ll sleep early.”

Then you check one video.

Then another.

Then someone sends you a message.

Then you watch something that you absolutely did not plan to watch.

Suddenly it is 2:17 in the morning.

You look at the clock with genuine disbelief.

“Where did the time go?”

The time went exactly where it always goes.

You gave it to the internet.

Yet the next night, you make the same promise.

“Tonight will be different.”

It usually isn’t.

Cleaning Before Someone Visits

You can live with a messy room for three days without caring.

Then someone tells you they are coming over.

Suddenly you become an interior designer.

Clothes disappear.

Tables are cleaned.

Things that have been sitting in the same place for weeks suddenly become unacceptable.

You clean areas that nobody will even see.

You start questioning objects you previously considered essential.

“Why do I have this?”

Into the drawer.

“Why is this here?”

Into the drawer.

Eventually, everything goes into a drawer.

Problem solved.

Future you will deal with it.

Checking the Time and Immediately Forgetting It

You look at the clock.

You see the time.

You understand the time.

You close your phone.

Thirty seconds later:

“What time is it?”

You check again.

This happens repeatedly throughout the day.

It is one of those mysteries of human behavior that science has apparently decided not to investigate.

Maybe the first time simply didn’t count.

The Strange Comfort of Cancelled Plans

You agree to go somewhere.

At first, you’re excited.

Then the day arrives.

Suddenly you feel tired.

Very tired.

Then someone cancels.

And instead of being disappointed, you feel an enormous sense of relief.

You respond:

“Oh, that’s okay! We can do it another time.”

Inside, fireworks are happening.

You are going home.

You can wear comfortable clothes.

You can watch something.

You can do absolutely nothing.

And somehow, doing nothing becomes the best plan you never made.

Maybe Being an Adult Is Just Learning to Laugh at Yourself

Perhaps adulthood is not about becoming perfectly organized, endlessly productive, and completely serious.

Maybe it is also about accepting that we are all slightly ridiculous sometimes.

We forget why we entered rooms.

We talk to ourselves.

We lose things that are in our hands.

We make plans we don’t want to keep.

We open refrigerators hoping for miracles.

And we promise ourselves that tomorrow we will finally become the person who goes to bed early.

Tomorrow keeps receiving a lot of responsibility.

The truth is, life becomes a little easier when you stop expecting yourself to behave perfectly all the time.

Laugh at the small mistakes.

Enjoy the strange habits.

Let yourself be human.

Because somewhere out there, another adult is probably standing in front of an open refrigerator, wondering what they came there for.

And honestly?

They probably forgot too.
